A Response to Cory Doctorow's Lecture
I could not agree more with Doctorow’s views on Digital Rights Management Technology. These traps fail beacuse the user turns into the hacker. Our technology begins controlling us, not vis versa.
I related to the analogy of buying $10,000 worth of CDs and $10,000 worth of DVDs. With the CDs you can share them online, email them, use them in projects, turn them into mp3s, ect. And with the DVDs, all you can do is watch them; what a waste. This is where our current DRM procedures and copyright laws are failing us.
I too believe that the copyright industry should crreate diversity in its participation. Users should be able use the things they own in any way desired. If this was our future, the world would be a much more creative place where creativity is easier to utalize.
